Via Regia (High Road)
From the Middle Ages one of the main routes in Central Europe was the so-called "High Road", also known as "The King's Highway" (Via Regia). Cologne, Leipzig, Wrocław, Cracov, Lvov or Kiev were the cities that flourished along this route. The way gave rise to new towns too - among them Lwówek Śląski, Złotoryja, Środa Śląska, Legnica or Lubań have the oldest town privileges in Poland. Via Regia does not have one fixed route. It was rather a "corridor" liable to change together with the political situation, flooding, and finally established and burned down inns. The currently suggested Way of St. James along the "High Road" tries to restore its route in late Middle Ages, when the Lower Silesia witnessed its most intensive growth in the history. We hope that today Vis Regia runs a chance of becoming a backbone - a route where many people will meet up to discover the beauty of the Lower Silesia and of its inhabitants.
The current section from St. Ann Mount through Opole, Wrocław, Legnica to Zgorzelec is Orly the beginning of the Via Regia of today. We want the Way of St. James from Jarosław, through Cracov and the Upper Silesia to follow suit. Also other activities can demonstrate how Highly important this Road is. And most of all, still teeming with life.
